The majority of the 80 acre vineyard was planted in September 1999 with follow-up plantings in 2000, 2004 and 2005.
Approximately 50 acres are planted to shiraz, with the remainder of the vineyard dedicated to cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, petit verdot, malbec, durif and viognier.
The site is highly undulating, with the best quality fruit coming from the elevated ridges of the valley slope where an exposed quartz reef and rocky soil create an exceptionally well drained bed for the vines.
Pyren Vineyard’s viticulturalist, Tim Searle, manages the vineyard carefully to ensure that the vines produce low yields of healthy, concentrated and fully ripe fruit each year. Typical tonnage rates are between one and a half to two tonnes per acre.
